The 0.1-Second Rule

A joint study by Google and Deloitte found that improving mobile site speed by just 0.1 seconds (100 milliseconds) resulted in an 8.4% increase in conversions and a 9.2% increase in average order value for retail sites.

The Bounce Rate Reality

Google analysed millions of mobile page loads and found that as page load times increase from 1 second to 3 seconds, the probability of a user bouncing (leaving immediately) increases by 32%. If it takes 5 seconds, the bounce probability jumps by 90%.

The Conversion Drop-off

“Milliseconds Make Millions” (Google & Deloitte)

The Methodology: Google commissioned Deloitte to analyse real-world data, not just controlled lab tests. They tracked 30 million user sessions across 37 major brands in Europe and the U.S.

The Control: They tracked mobile load times hour-by-hour for 30 days. No UX or design changes were made to the sites during the study, isolating site speed as the sole variable affecting the change in conversions.

The Google & SOASTA Benchmark Study

The Methodology: Google used a deep neural network (machine learning) to analyse a massive dataset of mobile web sessions. They looked at 900,000 mobile ad landing pages spanning 126 countries to model how different load times precisely correlated with users abandoning the page before it loaded.
